How to Improve the Sealing Performance of Rubber Fittings

Improving the sealing performance of rubber fittings requires comprehensive optimization from multiple aspects, including material selection, structural design, manufacturing process, and installation and maintenance.

Sealing performance is a key indicator for preventing leakage in fluid transmission, especially important in high-pressure, high-temperature, or corrosive media environments. The following are core strategies for improving sealing performance:

Select High-Performance Sealing Materials

Choosing rubber materials that are resistant to aging and compression set is fundamental. For example:

Fluororubber (FKM): High temperature resistance, oil resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, suitable for harsh working conditions.

Silicone Rubber (SI): Maintains elasticity over a wide temperature range of -80℃ to 280℃, with excellent resilience and resistance to permanent deformation over long-term use.

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) and Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR): Maintain good sealing performance in oily media; HNBR has higher thermal stability and pressure resistance.

Optimize the Vulcanization Process and Increase Crosslinking Density

Vulcanization is a crucial step that determines the sealing performance of rubber. Using a peroxide vulcanization system can form more stable C-C crosslinks, significantly reducing compression set and improving heat and aging resistance. Simultaneously, precise control of vulcanization temperature, time, and pressure avoids under- or over-vulcanization, ensuring a uniform and dense rubber structure.

Appropriate addition of reinforcing fillers: Adding appropriate amounts of carbon black, silica, or nanofillers can enhance the mechanical strength and extrusion resistance of rubber. For example, silica used in conjunction with silane coupling agents can improve dispersibility, increase tensile strength, and reduce permanent deformation. However, attention must be paid to the filler ratio; excessive filler can lead to excessive rigidity, which can negatively impact resilience.

Improved structural design to enhance self-sealing capability:

Designing a pre-tightening sealing structure at the interface, with the inner diameter of the rubber ring slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the pipe end, creates an initial pre-tightening force to prevent leakage under no-pressure conditions.

Using a composite sealing structure, such as a step seal (composed of a PTFE wear-resistant ring and an O-ring), utilizes the elastomer to continuously apply pressure, compensating for gaps caused by wear.

For high-pressure systems, use metal frames or flange connections to improve overall sealing stability.

Control the operating environment and installation specifications.

Avoid prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, ozone, or extreme temperatures; add antioxidants and light stabilizers if necessary.

During installation, ensure the interfaces are clean and aligned, avoiding twisting or excessive stretching to prevent stress concentration that could lead to seal failure.
