How to Determine if Rubber Fittings Need Replacement

A five-step self-inspection method-"look, touch, smell, test, and use"-can quickly determine if rubber fittings need replacement, allowing for timely elimination of safety hazards.
Look: Observe the appearance for obvious signs of aging.
Surface Cracks: Check the surface of the rubber hose for small or deep cracks, especially near bends and joints; these are typical early signs of aging.
Color and Shape Changes: Aging rubber often appears yellowed, loses its luster, bulges, or shows localized deformation.
Leakage Signs: Check for oil stains, water stains, or crystals at the connection points, indicating potential micro-leakage.
ouch: Test elasticity and texture by feel. Normal rubber should be soft and elastic, quickly rebounding after being pressed.
If it feels hard, brittle, or does not recover after being pressed, it indicates that the internal structure has deteriorated and lost its sealing ability.
A powdery or sticky surface also indicates that the material is decomposing.
Smell: Use your sense of smell to assess leak risk.
Especially for gas or fuel lines, if you can smell a pungent odor (such as gas or gasoline) near the pipe, it is very likely due to a minor leak.
Even without obvious cracks, stop using the line immediately and replace it.
Test: Use simple tools to assist in detection.
Air tightness test: For sealable systems (such as cooling pipes or brake pipes), use an air pump to pressurize to the working pressure, apply soapy water, and observe whether bubbles appear to determine if there is a hidden leak.
Service life verification: Check the installation records or estimate the service life. It is recommended to replace household gas rubber hoses after 18 months; industrial or automotive hoses generally should not be used for more than 3–5 years.
