How To Determine If An Expansion Joint Is Aging

Whether an expansion joint is aging or fatigue-damaged can be determined through a comprehensive assessment of its appearance, operating status, and professional testing. Aging is more common in non-metallic materials such as rubber, manifesting as a decline in physical properties; fatigue damage is more common in metallic expansion joints, resulting from the accumulation of internal damage under repeated stress. Both can lead to leaks, failures, and even safety accidents.

 

Typical Signs of Aging (Common in Rubber/Non-metallic Expansion Joints)

Obvious Changes in Appearance

Surface becomes sticky, hardens, cracks, powders, or loses elasticity.
Mold growth, discoloration, swelling, or significant deformation

Decrease in Physical Properties

Reduced elasticity, difficult to return to its original shape after being compressed.


Poor sealing, slight leakage or traces of media penetration

Exceeded Service Life

Rubber expansion joints typically have a lifespan of 2-5 years under normal operating conditions. Long-term exposure to high temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, or ozone accelerates aging.

Even if the appearance is intact, regular replacement is recommended to prevent sudden failure.
